Spent about an hour just watching them last night, after putting in some new shells I bought.
I have watched them before looking over new shells, getting right in head first and turning them around giving them a really thorough check over but until last night never saw one actually swap over.
Really interesting to watch, He didn't hang about, once he had decided it was the one straight in,great to see.they do seem to like to take a prospective new home into the salt water to try it on, I have noticed next morning finding old shells in the water bowl. Only one of the "Wood end 5" still in it's original shell.
Two have dug in deep now and the others are all very active. Had two of them out yesterday scuttling around on our bed, they are quite bold, when I picked them up they pull back into their shell but within a couple of seconds they creep out and off they go, great little characters.
out of thirteen hermies i have only seen 5 for the last week, of those in the last couple of days has been one of the violas, hitherto terribly shy and rarely seen, but she is about and active (am hoping post moult for her!!)

to give me further clues i cant keep up with their food in that last 2 - 3 days, usually loads left over, not the last few days!! and the biggest clue, the salt water pool, which holds 300ml salt water, is being drained twice daily again not seen since i got the newbies in august!!!

i refilled the pool during my restless phase in the early hours of the morning, then when i got up this morning was shocked to see it totally dry, so re filled again, and just as i have gone to check on their food 10 mins ago the salt pool dry again, they must be carrying some water with them as its not spilling anywhere but thats nearly a litre of salt water in just under 24 hours!!!!

Hi there
A quick question.
When I got my hermies, I droped in two large bits of cuttlefish bone. These were ones picked of a beach in 2006, washed, dryed and cleaned. I normaly use them in my GAL tank and they love them.

My hermies spent the first few days on their new life on the cuttle fish bones, picking away and eating it. Is this normal? Were they deprived of calcium in the pet shop and were making up for lost time? Or were they are the salt which might have still been present?

They have settled down now, and eating normaly, being picky about their food (sea food sticks seem to be a fave)..

Hi there
Just joined and thought I would give a quick introduction.

I have two hermies, Sid and Frake, recently brought. I had a cold water fish tank, and the fish caught the evil slime disease, heart broken I decided that I did not want any more fish and had been eyeing up hermies in the petshop, so I finaly gave in and got two of them (along with the tank stuff they needed).

I kept flidder crabs before, which was great! The male died quite quickly, we went on holiday and the father in law removed the cast thinking that the male had died, but the female (Bitsy) lived for almost 3 years which is quite amazing from what I have found on the internet. Her death was partly my fault, I changed her water and that stressed her out to much (it was smelly water, but its what she liked).

As well as Sid and Frake and have a guppy collective, indian stick insects, a fire bellied newt (Albert, who is 9 years old), GALS and a hogg nosed snake (Kartush aka hiss head or grumpy head) oh and two cats.

Sid and Frake seem to be settling in nicely, both totaly different personalities and PP crabs. Sid is very out going, if I pick him he up almost falls out of his shell to get to me, and crawls around quite happly. He nipped me once, and instantly let go again. He is very out going and quite tame.

Frake on the other hand started out well, within 12 hours he had changed shells and then 12 hours later changed back to his old shell! But he is so scared, when he nipped me he held on for dear life!! He will come out of his shell, but it takes a while and he keeps withdrawing. He is also missing a leg, so I wonder if he was mistreated?

But I think they are wonderfull creatures, very charming and interesting.. I look forward to many years of sharing my home with them.

We adopted him from a shelter after his breeder chucked him and his sister out because they had too much colour on them to meet show standards, his sister escaped when at the vets and was never found by them, but Oscar was found and taken to the shelter and that is where I adopted him from. :D

Hi everyone I forgot about these. The first pic shows the farm and the tube to the food pot. I am going to add more tubing and pots as soon as all the bits and bobs arrive, so they can have different areas outside the farm.
In the 2nd pic you can see the little tunnels and chambers thay have made.
I had to laugh the other day, I gave them a few grains of sugar, they all came racing for it but on the way back they stopped and ate it...Naughty little workers should have taken it back to the farm...Tut tut.
Ohh should have said I don't keep them in the window (they would fry!) but the light was best there for the camera.
